Just from an initial visual appearance, this rain barrel different than most others. Today, most of the rain barrels that you can find on the market today are round.  The Achla RB-03 is rectangular. From a placement standpoint, this type of shape offers great advantages -- chiefly the fact that it is flat on its side means that you can place it closer to a wall without have any wasted space.  Since it's rectangular, it also takes up far less space than most round barrels.

Another advantage that this particular rain barrel has over other rain barrels is its color -- it's brown.  The brown shade allows the barrel to blend in with most, typical garden environments and color schemes.  A number of other rain barrels are green, and although green is probably a color that you think of with regard to gardening, the green barrels usually jump off the scene, visually, and are therefore quite noticeable. Of course, you may not view this as an advantage as color selection is a very personal decision.

The Achla has it spigot on the very bottom of the barrel. This is superior to most other rain barrels as it allows you to harvest all of the water from the barrel without having to tip it over which can be clumsy and awkward.

I compared prices on rain barrels before I finally bought this one. Some were so expensive (and VERY ugly). This one is reasonably priced and blends in well with my split-log sided home. Another huge plus is the hose connection is all the way at the bottom of the barrel so you can use every last drop of water. Most rain barrels have the hose connection at least a few inches from the bottom so there's water you can't get to. Connecting an overflow hose required a little work with a Dremmel tool and a few dollars at the local hardware store for the hose and a connector, but nothing too difficult. All in all, definately worth the price and the small amount of work.

What if it overflows?

We installed two of these recently. On the positive side, the flat design allows it to be placed up against the house. On the other hand, the hose connection is just a simple hose clamp which seems kind of flimsy but easy enough to repair should it break. Also, since gravity is providing the water pressure, the higher off the ground the barrel is the more pressure. Stack up some bricks or build a platform, otherwise you won't be able to use the bottom few inches of water unless you run the hose downhill. Finally, I totally failed to consider the possibility of overflowing. Our roof footprint is roughly 1000 square feet and the two barrels fill up within half an hour of steady rain. If you don't want to have the overflow pouring right onto your foundation, you either have to leave the open hose on the ground (thus defeating the entire purpose of a rain barrel) or rig up something yourself. There are 1.5" dia overflow ports on either side which can easily be opened up with a hacksaw. Then you'll need some plastic tubing and another hose clamp--a few bucks at the Home Depot and not a big deal, but it looks bad and for what you pay for the barrel that kind of thing should be included.

I also received my rain catcher beat up and missing parts. There is no bracket to hold the hose up (but there is a big hole where it should be...) and the clamp sent to secure the hose is too large. Without being able to tighten the hose clamp, the rain catcher really is useless. I waited six weeks for this backordered item and will try to contact the company who sent it, but based on other reviews, I am not optomistic. Unless you enjoy shopping roulette, stay away.

good, but....

I bought one of these in the spring and then bought another because it fills up so fast. It works very well...fills up with one good thunderstorm, but I had a problem with the screened top cover. I don't know if it was just the force of the rain or if a small animal stepped on the screening, but it ripped away from the edges. I emailed the Achla company and was told that I had to contact whoever I bought it from, as they were no longer making this rain barrel. Not believing that a company would not stand by their product, I called and got the same answer. In other words, if it breaks be prepared to fix it yourself somehow (which is what I did), or mail it back to Amazon. You can't just leave the screen off because a small animal (like a cat) could then possible fall into your barrel and drown, not to mention the fact that you will breed mosquitoes in it. The second barrel I bought, the 54 gal green one from Achla, has a better configuration in that its top cover is reinforced with hard plastic spokes, so that even if the sceening did rip, it is doubtful that anything could fall into the barrel.

Thanks to the other review of this product, we chose to get this rain barrel out of the many offered. It was easy to set up and after just one steady half-hour rain, the barrel is half full, so I'm back to order another one to link with the first one. The information said that there is a linking "kit" included with each barrel, but I didn't get one of those with the first order- if it isn't included in the second one, we'll have to rig up a link between the two. Shouldn't be too hard. The flat shape sits against the wall and doesn't look bad at all and takes up less space than a round barrel. Excellent price and with Prime, an even better deal.

Works OK until it falls apart

I owned two of these downspout diverters for two years. They worked OK, but they don't allow as much water to pass through the bottom end as they allowed to enter the top. When it rains heavily water will leak out the top of the diverter and run down the side of your house. I patched mine up with foam sealant, but it was annoying. After two years these units took a beating from the sun and basically fell apart. The plastic in mine wasn't very thick and seemed to break down after being outside for a while -- hopefully they've modified the design. I've been using the RainReserve diverter units for a couple of months now, and I'm very impressed. Better plastic, MUCH stronger, and they have a hatch that can be removed to clean out the entire unit. The hoses are bigger too (and you can hook up two barrels to one diverter to fill them in parallel). Best of all, they don't suffer from the capacity issue that plagues this one. The extra $10 is worth it. Your mileage may vary.

The order information didn't let me choose between a unit that works with a 3" or a 4" downspout. The unit I received is for a 3" downspout and I need to buy a converter unit to get it to work with my downspout. I bought a second unit from another supplier where I was able to designate my downspout's size. It works fine.

Today we will be reviewing the Algreen 81001 Cascata Rain Barrels Water Collection and Storage System in the 65 Gallons size.  The 81001 is twenty pounds, 25 inches wide and 43 inches tall. It is made from molded plastic that won’t crack, chip, or fade.  It is double walled for extra strength and durability.  It comes with a corrosion proof screen guard and removable crown planter, meaning you can put a plant on top so it doesn’t just look like an empty pot.  And it has brass spigot and hook to hang your garden hose.

Personally, I would not consider a rain barrel that didn’t have a spigot and hose attachment at the bottom.  This makes getting to your collected rainwater so much easier.  Instead of having to slop around in your rain barrel (and this gets quite messy once you’re near the bottom of the barrel, not to mention the waste from all the spillage) you can simply flip the spigot and collect water into a watering can, or use a hose to water your plants directly from the barrel.

This unit is really attractive.  In fact, it is one of the most attractive rain barrels out there.  It looks like a large terra cotta planter and you can put in a beautiful flowering plant.  It is also very easy to assemble.

I did not mention the hose that comes with it above when I was describing the product.  That is because is should be replaced.

And my one negative is that, while it has an overflow spout, this does not come with a hose. Even if there was a hose available the spigot is not large enough to handle a heavy downpour and the resultant overflow. This is easily remedied however, by using a rain barrel diverter.

Beautiful but needs to ship with overflow hose

These Algreen Cascata "barrels" are gorgeous. I've had folks knocking at the door wondering where in the world I got them. I have three and would order another except Amazon is out of them. The free shipping was also a plus. Pro: 1. Beauty. Drop dead gorgeous. 2. Strength. Planter is double lined. Body is strong and should hold up fine. 3. Easy assembly. You'll need one slotted screwdriver. 4. The planter at the top. This is great with fuschia, for example. 5. Will hold 65 gallons. This is 10 gal. more than my other barrels. Con: 1. Drain hose is cheap; it crimps. Replace this with a decent hose. 2. Does not come with an overflow hose. You'll have to get a pool overflow hose at Home Depot or Lowes, plus a hose clamp, if you don't want it to overflow on its own foundation, causing major problem. 3. Planter is great to have, but it could be deeper. You'll need to line it with moss, or else hole drill for drainage. 4. This is not the type of barrel you'd want to string together with other barrels, probably, but if you did want to, you couldn't unless you mounted one barrel lower than the first one. Overall: I'd buy another one in a second it they were available. This is the best looking barrel out there for the front of your home. True terra-cotta color. The company is Canadian, and the quality is quite high. I love mine.

Barrel Fails Essential Task

I purchased four of these barrels through Amazon. Three of the four barrels leaked profusely where the white plastic fittings met the molded plastic of the barrel body. Two leaked from the fitting housings on the bottom of the barrel and the other on the housing for the spigot. In all three cases, the leak was fast enough that within 6 hours of filling the barrels, they were virtually empty again. I contacted the company, relying on their stated 20 year warranty, and when customer service did finally respond five days after I left my initial phone message, their solution was to send me a tube of black, rubbery silicone to apply to the fixture housings. Obviously, this solution destroys much of what is good about these barrels, their attractive appearance; and was no where near satisfactory as a customer service response. One of the barrels leaks to this day (I guess I didn't get the silicone goo applied appropriately). When I contacted the company again, they demanded proof of purchase. I faxed them a copy of the Amazon invoice which they claimed never to have received. I emailed them another copy, to which their response was that they "have no business relationship" with Amazon. To date, they have finally (after two months of back and forth) offered to replace one barrel, but apparently feel their black silicone solution is sufficient for the other two. Bottom line, I would never buy another product from this company again. A rain barrel should hold rain, and these do not at least 75% of the time in my experience.

Beautiful and Easy to use

I received my rain barrel in just 3 days. It is HUGE. Unlike the ugly recycled plastic rain barrels for sale elsewhere, this is a beautiful piece that adds to the aesthetics of my garden. It looks like a terra cotta planter. I planted strawberries in the top, so they can hang down the sides but not take over the garden. I bought a 1/2" boiler drain spigot, sprayed it with WD40, and inserted it into the overflow tube. Very tight fit. Then I attached a length of garden hose to the spigot and ran it away from the house. This solved most of the overflow problem. However, the overflow tube is not big enough to drain fast enough during a really hard, long rain. Water will escape by flowing between the top of the barrel and the crown planter. Prepare the foundation accordingly and do not place the barrel in a place where your basement may be easily flooded.

Goods: lightweight when empty. very realistic looking plastic terracotta. overflow valve for attaching another rain barrel (higher capacity). spigot in front for dispensing water. screen trap to prevent leaves ext. from entering your barrel. hose on the side for dispensing water. room on top for hanging plant or pot. Bads: scratched up during shipment poorly wrapped (shrink wrap). glue seams on bottom and spigot (see video). water pressure relies on gravity so it needs to be full of water. the lid does not drain so you will need to drill a hole in the middle. if you have one downspout like I do you get higher rain volume so you need to attach a hose to the overflow valve and redirect the overflow (if you watch the video that is why I have a downspout right behind the rain barrel)or you can buy two and increase your storage capacity. Anyway hope this helps with your decision. Overall I am very satisfied
